THE Waigani Committal Court on Monday (July 4) ordered a student to pay K2700 for the damage he caused to a vehicle but spared him a jail sentence by putting him on a 12-month good-behaviour bond.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar told Amos Lubes, who had pleaded guilty to damaging a vehicle, that he should be sentenced to a year in prison with hard labour.
However, he said the court took into account  factors relating to the defendant – a first-time offender, a student and without family issues.
Bidar said the case was alcohol-related.
Bidar told the court that the basic function of the court was to teach a person and others a lesson.
