A STUDENT was raped by four men in Bonanamo village, Rigo, Central, on Christmas Day.
Provincial police commander John Maru said the circumstances surrounding the rape were not clear.
He said while villagers were celebrating Christmas the suspects abducted the victim and took turns raping her in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Maru said the victim, who is a secondary school student in one of the schools in the city, was in a coma and admitted at the Port Moresby General Hospital for treatment.
Maru said the suspects were known to the victim and were now on the run.
He condemned the attack, saying it was the work of people with no brains and little respect for women and girls.
Maru assured the public in Rigo and surrounding area that police would use all resources available to track down the suspects and arrest them.
In another report, police said a man from Maitu village, Tapini, Central, was washed away in Brown River after the dinghy he and four others were travelling in capsized on Dec 29.
Police said Ope Kipi, 17, went with friends upstream in a motorised dingy to do business and as they were returning heavy rain and floodwaters capsized the dinghy.
Maru said the other four people aboard managed to swim ashore but Kipi drowned.
Maru said Kipi’s body had yet to be found.
