SIX students from the Caritas Technical Secondary School in Port Moresby attained belts in various divisions after undertaking a month’s training in taekwondo.
To mark the occasion yesterday, the students and their four South Korean masters held a number of demonstrations to show the skills and techniques they learnt over the four-week period.
The South Korean masters Kim-hyo Dong, Park-rae Geun, Bae-dae Sang and senior master Kim-yong Whi were grateful to the school for giving them the opportunity to share their knowledge.
The school awarded them with certificates of appreciation.
Also attending were South Korean dignitaries, the PNG Taekwondo Federation president Sir John Dawanincura, staff and students who were captivated by demonstrations by the taekwondo students and their masters.
With the aura of determination and discipline in the air, staff and students joined in the display which went for at least three hours.
And as it continued the fluid-like movements then made way for more energetic demonstrations in the breaking of boards.
The day ended with the crowd favourite –taekwondo dance – a groovy set of movements using the martial arts techniques and shouts, in harmony with funky South Korean music in the background.
Some of the students who were watching found their groove and joined the group.
Sir John commended the students for their efforts and thanked the South Korean government for the help.
He said he would help the school find a better venue (Sir John Guise Stadium) for such an event in the future.
Sir John said it could be open to the public so the school could make some money to run their affairs.
