Students attend leadership course

MORE than 100 students from Divine Word University and Sogeri National High School received certificates for completing a leadership programme aimed at overcoming cultural barriers and nepotism (wantok system) in the country.
The diversity and inclusion programme was facilitated by DWU student representative council president Bilu Kasanda.
The programme included cultural competencies (intelligence), emotional intelligence, aspects of diversity and inclusion, patterns and styles of leadership, growing world-shrinking leaders, understanding organisational leadership, good governance, gender and equality and job creation and not job seekers.
Third-year DWU bachelor of medicine student Weslie Hamsrambaco said the programme had helped him a lot.
“I feel that I learned many new ways of dealing with issues personally and within an organisation,” he said.
Hamsrambaco said he understand and could differentiate between boundaries, limitations and style of leadership that could match those boundaries and limitations.
“In addition, I was motivated to be a job creator than a job seeker,” he said.
“I can advise others to take up courses that match the availability of jobs in the private, business, NGO (non-government orgnisation) and government sectors.”
Monica Yapu, a first-year tourism and hospitality student at DWU, said: “Diversity and inclusive leadership programme is a really nice programme that helps me to realise my strengths, weaknesses and skills in terms of leadership”.
The programme has so far seen 181 students from DWU and Sogeri graduated with certificates.
