A GROUP of final-year PNG studies and international relations students of Divine Word University are conducting an online awareness campaign against an increasing number of counterfeit products in PNG.
Group leader Delailah Karis said the campaign was part of their international and regional security studies assignment.
“We were supposed to do campaign in and around Madang town but decided to do it online because of the Covid-19 restrictions,” she said.
“The increase of counterfeit products is a security threat to PNG in terms of the impacts on our economy and the health of our citizens.”
Karis said counterfeited and pirated products were being produced and consumed all around the world, including PNG.
“Reports show that Asian countries are the largest counterfeit producers that are circulating in PNG,” she said.
“The type of products being copied and sold range from electrical appliances and clothing to food, drinks and drugs.
“Fake products have the potential of destroying small as well as a large businesses in PNG, while people who consume counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs, food and drinks can compromise their health.
“More effective enforcement and public support are needed to combat this issue of counterfeit products in PNG.”
PNG Customs team leader in Madang Anthony Brabar urged PNG companies to register their businesses so it would be easy to confiscate or destroy counterfeit products when reported.

  • This is one thing that brings a lot of health issues in our country. one of them I believe it much is the cutting down of nationals’ life expectancy and multitudes have lost lives just by eating continuously those Asian counterfeit foods so its good the PNG Government’s body so called Independent Consumer Competition Commission (ICCC) must police up with their Nobel duties and safe our lives.

  • I comment you for the effort in this regard. Yes are surrounded by fake world

  • PNG is not a dumping ground of fake goods. It’s quite frustrating to see and experience these fake products broken or damaged within few days or weeks after using. Our hard earned cash are robbed by selling these fake products to us. Authorities please help PNG.

  • I greatly appreciate you people for the effort that you put for the good of, I think every citizens of PNG.
From my own view, I can say in summary that the Papua New Guineans are only going for the prize of products regardless of the other things like quality of those products. Therefor it would be better if the Government take some actions like Taxation to bring the prizes of such fake products up and see if it is successful. If we try to stop those products completely the it will on the hand affect our country because they also contribute much through some things like, Paying tax to the state, create employment for the country’s workforce and many more.
    Just an opinion!

  • We know PNG is flooded with fakes goods, what I want to know is what is anyone doing about it? Can the students determine a course and pathway so their research bears fruit, no use telling us what we already know.

  • We know Asian goods are not good for our health yet we consumed them, we still afford their products/items even though their products never last long because they sold at cheap prices.
Thank you for carrying this awareness out. I believe the government and the ICCC will impose possible mechanisms to address and solve this issue more effectively.

  • This is how the university assignment and test should be set for the students. It help us, educate us and also others in real life situation. Enough of other country culture and theory. Let’s assess ourselves with the reality.
Thanks DWU and the lecturer who set the assignment.
