STUDENTS and male teachers of Mongniol Primary School in Wewak, East Sepik, gave a surprise celebration to all the female teachers to mark mother’s day.

A small gathering was organised by the Grade 8 students was held at the school’s basketball court on Friday morning in the presence of the five male teachers and the more than 1,000 students.

The female teachers were shocked when the students laced them with flowers and presented them with small gifts.

The National female reporter in Wewak who was invited to cover the event also got a surprise gift from the students.

It was a remarkable event for school as it was the first time they did that.

School captain Graham Suai, on behalf of the students, told the female teachers that they were more than a teacher and a mother.

“Thank you for teaching and discipline that you have given us and it is for that reason we salute you on this day to say ‘happy mother’s day to you’”, Suai said.

“You will celebrate on Sunday with your husbands and your biological children, whom they will give a best tap on your shoulders as a real appreciation to you as mothers but we students of Mongniol Primary today felt that we need to say you are one in million,” Suai told the female teachers.

School management presented the teachers with a cake as well as they were served light refreshment.

The event was ended on a note with students entertaining the teachers with creative dances.
