THE students of Busong Primary School in the Labuta local level government area of Nawaeb, Morobe, celebrated World Toilet Day last Thursday with hygiene competitions.
The two competitions were a poster and essay competition on health and hygiene as part of the celebrations.
The poster competition was won by grade six student Greg Geto and the essay competition was won by another grade six student Martha Alung who wrote an essay about menstrual hygiene.
The top three entries from each competition were rewarded with prices by World Vision.
World Vision’s Wash project supervisor Ronald Naki said this year’s World Toilet Day’s theme was “sustainable sanitation and climate change” which focused on health and the weather patterns.
He said this meant sustainable sanitation contributed to the climate change fight which helped to reduce greenhouse gases and boost crops and food productivity and security.
“When we manage our waste, we will see a lot of changes,” Naki said.
“Children will stop getting diseases when we build good toilets and teach them how to manage their waste and the right place to dispose it.”
