STUDENTS from Don Bosco Agro-Technical Secondary School in Kokopo did a clean-a-thon in four different areas within the town on Friday.
More than 400 students and their teachers started collecting rubbish from Takubar, Papindo and to Vunapope bus stop areas and further to the Tropicana supermarket and to the main business areas.
Staff of the Kokopo-Vunamami urban local level government (LLG) and the Kokopo mayor Benjamin Mesmin Murliu also joined the students.
With the help of Kokopo-Vunamami LLG, the students showed the people where to dispose their rubbish.
Rubbish bins were placed in different areas of the town.
More than three rubbish bins were placed in front of all supermarkets, business houses and government offices.
According to the school’s in service coordinator Piliaima Tanda, the cleanathon programme was a community service in line with Don Bosco Agro-Technical’s cultural celebration which ended yesterday.
Tanda said they did an annual cleanathon within Kokopo.
Murliu on behalf of the Kokopo-Vunamami LLG and Kokopo authority thanked the students for the cleanathon programme.
Murliu said it was important people should take ownership of Kokopo and be responsible of their own rubbish.
“I am making an appeal to all of us to respect each other when doing your business in town.”
Murliu gave K500 to the students and teachers as an appreciation.
He said the K500 was his personal money.
