Students deserve to be heard about their rights
The National, Tuesday 1st of April, 2014
I PITY the University of Techonology (Unitech) students for being deprived of their right to a quality education.
The government preaches about quality education and yet fails to draw a line on what it means and needs.
Deliliah Gore does not seem to understand that all the students want is for Unitech to be better managed.
There is a correlation between good administration and quality education.
Good management correlates with what the students want.
Morobe Governor Kelly Naru has warned the students to show cause for the boycott or miss out on the provincial government’s scholarship scheme.
Southern Highlands Governor William Powi has also cautioned his students to return to classes.
The students’ message in the petition is clear and it has not been answered, resulting in more confusion.
The governors should be trying to solve the standoff, not force the students to return to classes.
Decision-makers in PNG often seek to delay to the very last minute.
Why?
If you are in a position to decide, and you fail to do so, resign as you are delaying progress.
Indecision is a clear sign of incompetence.
The students are boycotting for their right to better quality education and the national leaders must seriously consider their grievances – not just be mere sponsors of education under the guise of investing in human resources.
Students in all our universities deserve better quality educational services with facilities that meet the market demands.
