RAMU International School in Madang celebrated the 44th Independence anniversary in colourful style on Friday.
Their special guest was Nanny Huhume, husband of the Papua New Guinea flag designer late Susan Karike Huhume.
The theme of the celebration was “My culture, my identity – strongim pasin tumbuna.”
The celebration was filled with traditional dances from the country’s four regions, string bands, modern dances, flag rising, food sharing and other activities by staff, students and parents.
Principal Les Potter said this year’s independence celebration had been one of their biggest.
“The important thing to celebrate during such events is culture.
“The children must maintain ties to their culture. “What we want to achieve during such events is to make sure we maintain strong sense of community,” Potter said.
He said some dances put on by the students during the celebration were assessed.
Independence events coordinator Benny Pari said the independence celebrations was a part of their yearly programme.
He said preparations had started in term two and it was pleasing to see the day enjoyed by the school community.
Parent Pedra Agi said the event was a proud moment for the school and benefited the students.
“We are privileged the school is helping us to teach children their traditional ways especially during such events,” Agi said.
