FOUR students from the University of Natural Resources and Environment and the National Fisheries College have completed a six-week training on fisheries and the marine sector.

They underwent the training at the division of fisheries and marine resources in the East New Britain provincial administration.

According to provincial liaison officer with the division, Dickson Kondaul, it was part of the training for third year fisheries students.

Kondaul said the training would  help them gain work experience and learn to write reports for their assessment by the university.

The students – Oliver Paiau, Augustine Igen and Gadi Wutnalom from ENB and Sainimily Wesley from Eastern Highlands – began their training on March 12.

Kondaul said the students were issued specific instructions and did their project assignments with districts and local level governments in their respective priority areas of concern as per their annual activity plans.

Paiau and Wesley were tasked to assess the status of fish farming in relation to growth and effectiveness of fishery in Melkoi and Toma Vunadidir LLGs respectively, while Wutnalom conducted baseline surveys on mangroves, its importance and its potential for introductions and was engaged to Raluana LLG.

Igen was engaged to assessing the capacity gaps of fish markets in relation to the marketing infrastructure, establishments and linkages in Pomio district.

Kondaul said the issues of higher priority identified would be discussed in their reports, that hinders fisheries development and recommendations made would greatly assist the fisheries division, districts and LLGs to incorporate in their works plans for implementation.

Kondaul acknowledged PNG UNRE and NFC in Kavieng to allow the students to come to ENB and assist the division.

He also commended the districts and LLGswhich have been directly been involved with the students during their engagement.
