Students facing difficulties to access online material

Education

STUDENTS at a flexible open distance education (Fode) study centre in Lae, Morobe, have raised concern that the subjects they were expected to take up will require them to be downloaded and studied using electronic devices.
The students of 12-Mile Fode centre reported that they were finding it hard to use the applications to do their studies, according to centre supervisor Mervyn Gabarura.
Gabarura said the students, most of whom were from the districts, struggled to access the six subjects online because they lived in areas that had no power supply.
“The majority of the students that register at this centre are from rural areas in Markham, Huon Gulf, Menyamya and other areas where rural electrification is a problem,” he said.
Gabarura said some of the students could not afford to buy the devices or equipment needed to have online access which hindered their studies.
Currently, most students that register at that centre are grade eight and 10 school leavers with 20 already registered while many are still coming in for registration.

  • FODE Resource materials are available free and students can either login to website “http://www.education.gov.pg/FODE
If internet is an issue, students/ Centre Supervisor can approach the Provincial FODE Centre Coordinator in Lae
The soft copies of resources materials are available and they can be downloaded free of cost in the flash drives /computer/laptops etc.

Nothings comes free, if students want education and they have to travel or nearby FODE centre to access education. Thousands of students have enrolled with FODE system nationwide and good number of them succeed and 12 Mile FODE students in Lae can definitely have access to education.
