THE University of Papua New Guinea has paid K214,884 to the Student Representative Council as its share of profits from the campus canteen.
The Student Enterprise Centre made a profit of K300,000 in its last financial year.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Albert Mellam said it was the first time the profit from the centre was shared with the student body.
“It was necessary and part of the management team’s plan to modernise the way business is carried out at the nation’s leading institution of learning and to fulfil the management’s objective of delivering effective quality services,” he said. He said the Student Enterprise Centre was the brainchild of pro vice-chancellor academic affairs, Professor Pulapa Subba Rao and had become a profitable business operation.
He encouraged the student body to use the money wisely on student-related activities.
Mellam encouraged dialogue between the student body and the administration because it is was sign of evolving modern leadership.
“UPNG can only grow from strength to strength with the cooperation of all stakeholders and students are important in this equation,” he said.
