UNIVERISTY of PNG’s (UPNG) Yangoru-Saussia students have shown their support for the Tuonumbu community in East Sepik through donations for those affected by house fires.
The students led by third-year political science student Bray Wafy donated 26 boxes of clothing and cutlery to help the victims of house fires which were from a retaliation attack by Yangoru people last month which saw 13 houses burnt down.
Wafy said they received overwhelming support and donations of items ranging from clothes, beddings, cutlery, and other goods from students on campus and other people throughout National Capital District.
“Our clothes donation drive was from Oct 26-31,” he said.
Wafy said 26 boxes of donated clothes were dry-cleaned before being airfreighted free of charge.
He said they received support to transport the items from Yangpru-Saussia MP Richard Maru.
Wafy said the UPNG students of Yangoru and Kubalia remained united despite the incident.
He thanked those from the university and the city who donated towards their appeal. He thanked Maru and Air Niugini for the free air freight that made the humanitarian appeal a success. The donated items reached its destination on Nov 5 and was handed over to the peace committee chairman Abraham Hombo to distribute to the victims.
