STUDENTS in Enga have been learning how to use the online selection system to help make study choice after grade 12.
The system was launched in 2017 by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology and was introduced to students in Enga with the support of the Porgera Joint Venture.
The mining company, through its community development section, engaged three officers from the Education Department to visit Porgera Secondary School and talk to the students about the selection system.
Higher Education officer Thimon Bune said the students heard about the processes involved in the online school leaver form application and a bit on the Chinese scholarship award package offered by the department.
Bune said there were no new changes in the selection process, only that the manual selection previously would now be done electronically.
“The system will process results and select students to study at their preferred institutions according to their academic performance. The advantages of this system are that it is transparent, cost effective, and it increases the chances of capable students being admitted into the tertiary institutions,” said Bune.
He said tertiary institutions in the country could not cater for the large number of students
coming from secondary schools every year.
