SEVEN students in Lae raised their own funds and travelled to Port Moresby to educate participants during the synod recently about the history of the Lutheran Church in Papua New Guinea.
Lutha’s Haus coordinator Jeremiah Moat said fundraising for their travel started last November through the sale of printed bags, T-shirts, facemasks, laplaps and food with the help from their families at Ampo.
Moat said the aim of setting up the information booth was to educate and inform Lutheran youths about the church’s history of their church and inform synod participants of the other functions and role of the church in PNG.
He said the booth was focused on the church’s history and its five divisions: Lutheran development, education, health, evangelism and workman training.
“We started our research on the histories and five divisions of the church in 2018 when most of us were in the secondary school, however, we were able to update our information last year during the divisional conference at Ampo.”
Moat said they had taken the opportunity to ask many questions to the divisional heads.
He said their perception of the church had changed since taking up the task.
“Before, we thought the church was only for evangelism and we didn’t know some of the basic divisions and functions of the church,” he said, adding that now, having a better understanding of the church gave them a new appreciation for it.
