Students from Kabwum get tuition fee help from district

ABOUT 100 students from Kabwum district in Morobe attending the Balob Teachers College in Lae had part of their tuition fees for 2017 paid by the district.
Kabwum District Development Authority chief executive officer Fidelis Harisol and electoral officer Stanley Leka handed over a K34,412.50 cheque to the college’s deputy principal (administration) Jack Awap on Monday.
Leka told Awap that the money was 50 per cent of the total fees and was paid in line with the district’s commitment.
“We have faith and trust in your college that’s why we are funding our students,” he said.
“We want a way forward to produce quality teachers from Kabwum.
“We’ve just received K1million for our DSIP this year but we have so many issues to address including the students school fees which is a commitment from the previous DDA and leader.”
Leka said education was an important priority for Kabwum and they would continue to support their students.
He said students would not be hand-picked but would have to apply and meet certain criteria to qualify for scholarships.
Leka said the new programme has the backing and blessing of MP Patrick Basa.
