MEETING Bob Dadae after he was sworn in as Governor-General is one highlight and significant occasion for students from a primary school in Milne Bay.
The 28 students from Vivigani Primary School on Goodenough Island were thrilled during their three-day stay in Port Moresby.
Kiriwina-Goodenough MP Douglas Tomuriesa said bringing the students across to Port Moresby was one way of helping them to understand some of the things taught in schools or in the village.
He said in a way it would help prepare them when they leave home for higher institutions.
Tomuriesa noted that this was not the first time the district sent in students to Port Moresby.
Earlier, he said the district had flown in councilors to observe parliamentary procedures and processes.
“This (Vivigani Primary School) is the third batch of students. This trip is not for the first,” Tomuriesa said.
“We started with councilors from the electorate because we realised that councilors didn’t know much about assembly procedures.
“It was a learning curve for the councilors.
“Now if you visit the two assemblies in Kiriwina and Goodenough you will realise they debate very well.
“We also thought why not do it for the students, so we bring in students (80 so far) from all over Kiriwina-Goodenough, most of them first time out of the villages. It was an eye opener for them.
“Also, bringing students into Port Moresby will help prepare them if they get selected to tertiary institutions outside of the district or Milne Bay.
“As we realise that students who come out from villages struggle to adjust in urban centers in the first few months.”
