STUDENTS from Southern Highlands attending the University of Technology have praised Governor William Powi for subsidising their school fees.

Second-year mining engineering student, Phapol Jera Maiz from Kip village, in the Lai-Valley local level government, said it was an initiative by Powi to help tertiary students.

He said previous administrations only gave priority to primary and secondary schools.

“I was going to withdraw because the fees had increased from K3,000 to K4,000 which is a huge burden to my parents who could not afford it.

“I am happy that I will now complete my studies without being handicapped by school fee,” he said.

He said many students attending tertiary institutions came from poor backgrounds.

“I am an orphan. My dad who is a subsistence farmer could not meet fees for me and my elder brother who is also attending a tertiary institution and should have paid K8,000 altogether,” he said.
