THE University of Goroka has referred 49 students to police who they allege enrolled through fraudulent means.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Musawe Sinebare confirmed referring the 49 students to Eastern Highlands police commander Superintendent David Seine Jnr.
He said the university’s bursary had discovered that the 49 students allegedly altered bank deposit receipts for their school fees before presenting them to the university staff during registration.
“The students deposited only K50 into the university account. Once the bank stamp is on the receipts, the students used the same coloured ink pens to add zeros and make it like a real deposit receipt,” he said.
“The deposits are done at different bank branches around PNG.”
Sinebare said the Bursary notified the university administration last month.
“The University Council was briefed of the tuition-fee issue. We have referred these students to the police fraud unit for further investigation and prosecution” he said,
Sinebare said more investigation would be carried out on how current and former students paid their fees at the bank.
Any students found to have been involved in illegal procedures will have their degrees and qualifications forfeited or withdrawn, he said.
Supt Seine Jnr confirmed that the matter was now in the hands of the police.
He has referred the matter to senior police fraud investigators.
