THE students of Kitip Lutheran Secondary School in Dei, Western Highlands, are cleaning the surrounding areas to encourage people to look after the environment.
The students have formed a group called Kitip Kona Kai (Kitip a good place) to clean areas around the school.
Team leader Apple Tei Peng said the plan was to protect the environment and educate people.
He said people did not understand the damage caused by littering and how it affected the environment.
“Even in market places where they sell cooked food and vegetables, you can smell rubbish,” Peng said.
“That is not healthy for the people and the environment as well.
“Rubbish destroys a good environment and it is also a great health risk to the people.”
Mt Hagen deputy city manager Robert Romba commended the students for coming up with the idea to collect the rubbish and protect the environment.
He said what the students were promoting cleanliness.
Romba said people should clean their areas and marketplaces.
“This programme initiated by the students will help to protect the surrounding environment,” he said. “This will also help to educate our people to take care of the environment, control their rubbish and make the surrounding areas become clean and healthy,” Romba said.
