Students told to behave and uphold campus laws

NEW and continuing students at the Divine Word University’s Rabaul Campus have been asked to behave and conduct themselves according to the core values of the institution.
Campus vice-president Dr Francis Hombhanje spoke of the values to students, teachers and staff of St Mary’s School of Nursing Vunapope Campus and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) Teachers’ College Kabaleo Campus — during the launching of the academic year on Friday at the OLSH Teachers’ College in Kokopo, East New Britain.
Hombhanje said the core values of DWU were integrity, academic excellence, community engagement and services, respect, diversity, hospitality, learning for life and social responsibility.
He said those values should shape the individual student’s personal qualities of scholarship and social awareness at local, national and international levels.
Hombhanje said the students who enrolled at the Vunapope School of Nursing would be studying under the faculty of medicine and health science while students who enrolled at the OLSH Teachers’ College Kabaleo would be studying under the faculty of education.
“Like other campuses of DWU, Rabaul Campus, has students coming from across the country with different cultural backgrounds and perspectives,” he said.
Hombhanje told the students that the campuses had rules and regulations that governed the behavioural conduct of students, therefore, all students should abide by those rules and regulations.
The vicar-general for the Catholic Church in ENB, Fr John Vagira, told the students to respect and love one another.
Vagira, who was the main celebrant at the Mass, encouraged students, staff and teachers to put their differences aside and work together.
“Let us make this year, 2019, a productive year,” Vagira said.
Meanwhile, the ENB education board has approved and sponsored 10 fulltime primary school teachers to attend the Kabaleo Teachers’ College for the bachelor’s degree programme this year.
The college will also run an in-service programme for primary school teachers.
