FIRST-year students of the University of PNG have been told to concentrate on their studies and avoid being distracted by “friends and social life”.
During an orientation programme at the Waigani campus, acting Chancellor Jeffery Kennedy reminded them of what they were there for after years of coming through the school system.
“You have worked hard and met the required GPA to be here and you have to continue to work hard to be able to progress to the next semester,” he said.
“Your parents and the communities you belong to have invested so much on you. So you have to make the best of your time here.
“During your first year, you will be distracted but you have to remind yourself what it takes to be here.”
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Kenneth Sumbuk urged the students to focus on their education.
“Make sure to settle in well in the first week of your academic year so your learning will not be affected. Each of you have the responsibility to determine your progress,” he said.
“The university does not fail students but administers and influence the GPA policy. So make it your business to maintain an average minimum GPA of 2.0 at the end of every semester.”
Lectures begin on Feb 18.
