Our cultural diversity must become our strength and heritage, National Cultural Commission acting executive director Ombone Kaiku says.

Kaiku emphasised the importance of culture and tradition during the Port Moresby National High School culture show last Friday.

He told the students that the theme of the cultural show “Our culture is our cultural heritage” meant a lot.

“The theme you have developed speaks a lot,” he said. Kaiku said Papua New Guineans had diverse cultures and traditions “and we should be proud to show them off”.

“We have diverse cultures and traditions,” he said.

“Our cultures and traditions are our heritage.”

He said PNG’s cultural heritage was seen in the songs, dances, costumes, art and designs, architecture, habits and languages. “Language is important in culture because it contains information, expressions and identity,” he said.

He said the culture and tradition displayed by students from different provinces were passed down through the generations.

“I can witness at this school’s cultural show that each dancing group representing a province is performing its cultural dances.”
