ALAKASAM Primary School is one of the remote schools situated within the mountain ranges of inland Baining in the Gazelle district commonly referred to as the highlands of the New Britain Island.
Recently, road linkage to the Alakasam people was made possible through the development of the New Britain highway.
Health services to the area are accessible through the Malasaet health centre.
The Malasaet health centre was upgraded to the Malasaet community health post and opened last Friday by East New Britain Governor Ereman ToBaining Jnr and Gazelle MP Malakai Tabar.
During the opening ceremony, students of Alakasam Primary School had this to say to their MPs, recited through a poem titled: My Dream School. Below is the poem:
My dream is to be,
In a special school,
A school where, I can feel safe,
Where I can be treated, the same,
A place where I feel that I belong,
Where I gave nutritious food to eat, Where I can turn on the tap and drink, Fresh cool and clean water when thirsty,
Where I have a space to play,
A place where I have lots of friends, Where my teachers are caring, Parents are supportive,
A place where I am excited to go each day. A place where I am not abused or harassed,
A place free of drugs and full of fun, A place where my teachers are comfortable,
A place where my teachers are safe from the rain, the wind and the cold. A place where my learning needs are available,
A place that have lots of good buildings, that will make me feel comfortable to learn more new things and bright ideas.
My special school is a place where I am free to love, to learn and grow in every way.
A place where I am protected from the wind, the sun the rain and the cold. Regardless of my race, my culture, my religion and my tribe.
I am nurtured as a very, very, special person, This is my dream, is it possible, who can help me?
Can my dream be fulfilled?
Here I am; all I need is a little bit of help.
