Two students with different disabilities have successfully completed grade 10 examinations and are setting clear goals to achieve in life.
Gerison Eric and Robert Wagias were among 561 students from Bugandi Secondary School in Lae who completed their exams on Friday.
They were former students of Morobe Special Education Resource Centre.
They did their elementary education at the centre and primary at Markham Road Primary School.
Eric and Wagias were selected for grade 9 at Bugandi in 2017.
Wagias, 22, has multiple disabilities.
Eric, who has speech and hearing disabilities, is aspiring to be a flight attendant.
He spoke to this reporter through sign language with the assistance of interpreter and special education teacher Siwi Pop.
“Nothing is impossible,” Eric said.
“Passengers will also learn sign language when I go through with them on safety tips while on the plane.
“Many people are yet to know and understand sign language as fourth official language of the country.
“Even my teachers at Bugandi don’t know sign language.
“That’s why I want to work in a public environment to deal with people every day in sign language so they can also learn.
“When people understand and use sign language, there’ll be inclusiveness in the society.”
Eric’s other plan is to undertake short management courses at Highlands Youth Training and Rehabilitation College in Jiwaka.
Bugandi deputy principal-academic Tetang Punumping said the school would continue to support students with disability. -“We graduate a female student with hearing impairment last year and now these two,” he said.
“We will continue to support students with disability to make the school inclusive.”
