Grade 12 students selected online to study at the University of Papua New Guinea will study through open colleges, pro-vice-chancellor Mange Matui says.
These were the students selected through the online selection process initiated by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology and not by manual selection by UPNG.
“UPNG open college is a platform on which internal programmes are run,” Matui said. “Students, after completing their studies, graduate with bachelors and diplomas from University of PNG.”
Vice-Chancellor Vincent Malaibe earlier said 126 students were affected, however, The National was not able to confirm how many were registered at the open colleges.
Matui said the students would still have the opportunity to apply to complete their studies internally if they meet the required grade point average.
He said the university’s open colleges had five main campuses – Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Alotau and Honiara – with other satellite campuses taking the number to 26.
He said a recent campus was opened at Pomio, East New Britain, and another one at Tari in Hela.
Matui said open college had about 15,000 students registered for 2018.
This includes students studying diploma and bachelor’s programmes as well as those matriculating.
He said applications were open all year around, with two entry points – one in April and the other in July.
