Papua New Guinea squash star Madako Suari Junior’s solo effort yesterday could not get his team into the gold medal play-off today in the team event.

During the men’s semi-final yesterday, Papua New Guinea lost to Fiji (3-0, 1-3). Suari’s excellent form helped his side win the last session.

PNG will compete against the Tahitians at 2pm today for the bronze in the men’s team event at the Steamships Racquet Club.

Fiji will be up against defending Pacific Games champions New Caledonia, which has been leading the points ladder since the start of the squash competitions.

After his win yesterday, Sauri said he was thinking of getting his team into the gold medal play-off and tried all his best but his effort s alone could not get him there.

“Because all my team mates lost, my score couldn’t make any difference and that affected those scores so we missed our chances of going higher in the competition.

“I was hoping to play for gold today but its okay we will try our best to get the bronze medal for the country,” Sauri said.

He said he was hoping his team would perform well in the singles, which start tomorrow.

The PNG women will compete against New Caledonia for the gold medal today at 4pm after the bronze medal play-off between Tahiti and Fiji.
