SPORT Minister Sali Subam and Member for Ijivitari and Higher Education Minister David Arore will officially kick off the 11th Tufi Cup soccer tournament at PNGIPA Oval in Port Moresby tomorrow.
According to the programme, the two ministers will be the special guests of the annual soccer tournament which has attracted 27 teams formed by Oro residents living in the National Capital District.
President of the Tufi Soccer Cup Johnsford Bunaga said a total of 18 men’s and nine women’s team will take part in the three-week tournament.
The theme of this year’s competition is working towards a united, safer and healthier Tufi and Oro community in NCD.
He said two teams, Musa and Tamarocks, have returned to the competition after a two-year absence while Tufi Marlins were removed from the competition for non-compliance of tournament rules including not paying last year’s fee requirements.
Bunaga warned clubs to adhere to tournament rules and regulations, adding that there was no room for complacency in the Tufi Cup.
Meanwhile, Bunaga is appealing to all clubs to pay their registration fees before taking the field.
Clubs fielding one team will pay K850, while two teams will pay K1,000 and three teams will pay K1,045.
“The amounts (registration fee) can be reduced but only when Tufi Cup soccer executives find a good sponsor to support our soccer tournament,” Bunaga said when explaining the high fees.
He urged all Oro people to come and support their teams in the true spirit of sport and to allow the sportmanship, good behaviour and respect to prevail over the three weekends of football.
