THE commitment of teachers is necessary to address the dropping standard of education in rural areas, an official says.
South Fly education education appointment officer Malangu Towalo said more than 200 primary school teaches in the Western district concluded the standard-based education (SBE) curriculum workshop from Dec 3-7.
He said the workshop was held at Daru Secondary School.
Teachers contributed K200 each to cover the cost of the workshop.
Towalo said all teachers should be on the same level before the 2019 academic year starts.
He said it was encouraging to see all teachers from remote schools in South Fly arrive by plane and boat for the workshop.
“OBE was phased out because there were complaints that it has negatively affected the standard of education in the country, which resulted in increasing illiteracy and poor numeracy skills,” Towalo said.
“In SBE, the same lessons will be taught each day right across the country and teachers must stay in school and be committed to teaching. If the teacher is absent, the class will be a lesson behind the rest of the country.”
Towalo said the commitment and dedication of teachers in rural areas to be in class to deliver lessons as scheduled was paramount for effective learning by students.
He said the workshop was run by the district’s standard officers with an external facilitator
from the PNG Education Institute, who was there to assess the work on the ground.
