A RUGBY league competition in a former tribal fighting zone in Kagua, Southern Highlands, ended on a high not on Saturday.
Eight teams from nine wards in Sugu Valley participated in the Awesa Cup sponsored by Alex Awesa, a businessman and local leader from Kiburu village in Imbonggu.
Awesa has started similar sports initiatives in the province aimed getting youth in communities involved in positive activities.
The initiative in Sugu Valley was staged at Aiya Rugby League ground under the theme: Lusim gun na holim ball (Leave the gun, hold the ball).
Awesa said he believed in using sport as a catalyst for change particularly to help bring peace.
“The whole idea behind me sponsoring this game is peace,” he said.
“Youths cannot live in isolation, they need to come together and take part in sporting activities.”
“In the future, every team must make sure to play a safe and clean game to promote peace,” he said.
Aiya rugby league president Rodney Peawi said the future of the sport in Sugu Valley was now in their hands. He said players from the Sugu Valley and Aiya leagues would be selected and form a team to compete in the offseason Ipatas Cup later in the year.
