‘Sumgilbar in need of services’

BASIC government services in the interior north coast area of Sumkar district in Madang have deteriorated for more than 20 years ago, a local leader says.
Community representative Desmond Sekum told The National that people had migrated to the coast in search of better health and education services and other opportunities.
He said no government service had reached the inland areas for close to 30 years now and the people were calling on their new member elect to hear their pleas and restore these much needed services in the communities.
“Most of the schools and the aid post that served the four wards in Sumgilbar local level government (LLG) were shut down years ago,” he said.
He said the services had been established by the Catholic Church but had eventually stopped because of a lack of government support.
He said this was true for the district’s two LLGs, Sumgilbar and Karkar.
