CANDIDATES, supporters and the public in East New Britain have been warned to act responsibly during the campaign period to avoid accidents or violence.
Provincial police commander Chief Inspector Januarius Vosivai issued the warning following careless and reckless attitudes shown by some supporters during the first week of the campaign period.
“It is our responsibility to minimise the high risk of our people getting involved in accidents,” Vosivai said.
“We’ve seen a lot of overloading, mass gatherings and it’s a concern for us.
“There are laws in place that regulate the use of roads by motorists and passengers.
“Police resources are limited and candidates must also take some responsibility for controlling of their supporters,” he said.
Vosivai told The National that police personnel had already been deployed to the four districts – Kokopo, Gazelle, Rabaul and Pomio – and tasked with monitoring the main highways.
He said after the close of nominations they had observed an increase in the movement of people which had led to more traffic rule breaches.
“I’d like to appeal to the candidates and their supporters to serve the law during campaign.
“As candidates, you are leaders.
“We expect you to show leadership to your supporters.”
