Supporting Govt’s decision on mine

Letters

I AM happy as an Engan to see the Prime Minister James Marape and his Cabinet doing the right thing by rejecting the renewal of the special mining lease (SML) for Barrick Niugini Ltd.
We have been deprived of our rights to enjoy full benefits from Barrick for over 30 years.
No meaningful benefit of any kind has been given to the people of Porgera and Enga.
Porgera valley has not seen developments in terms of proper electricity and water supply.
Barrick has not done anything to resettle the displaced landowners.
We are tired of the company’s propaganda of providing services through the tax credit scheme, royalties and other avenues.
The people of Porgera, Enga and PNG are not in the stone ages anymore.
The statements by former prime minister Peter O’Neill and Opposition Leader Belden Namah saying that Marape and his Cabinet have done the wrong thing is rubbish.
We have done the same for OK Tedi and we will do the same for Porgera.
We are tired of seeing our resources going to the dogs.
