Survival of the fittest in Lae

Letters, Normal

I witnessed a heart-wrenching event on Monday.
A little girl was hit by a PMV at the market.
The heart-breaking thing was she was trying to pick up a scrap of food when she was knocked by the bus.
She got up and reached under the bus for the food before doubling over in pain.
It seemed the pain of being hit by a bus was nothing compared to her hunger pangs.
The bus driver and crew did not even bother to check if she was hurt as once they confirmed that she was a homeless, they drove off.
This is what our second city has turned into, a heartless place.
Have we reached a stage where the fittest survive?
I was told the number of homeless children in Lae is growing.
Where are their parents?
What caused them to abandon their children?
