A MAN has been arrested by police in Madang for allegedly killing a former ward councillor in Transgogol.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang told The National that police had received information that former councillor Omuk Salil of Barum village had been killed.
He said he led a team of policemen to Barum village and arrested a 27-year-old man.
Rubiang alleged that the suspect had accused Salil of practising sorcery and causing the death of his younger brother who was in Grade 12 last year at Karkar Secondary School.
Rubiang said the man and others allegedly attacked Salil in his home.
He tried to flee when he saw them coming but they caught up with him. Salil’s family reported the matter to police who with the help of the people brought the suspect to Madang town and locked him up in the cell.
He said Salil’s family had been relocated. His body had to be buried quickly by the relatives because it was badly mutilated.
“I am now calling on the community to work with the police on the matter and the remaining suspects to surrender to police.
“Transgogol had been a hotspot area for murder and cult activities and I want it to stop and the people to change.”
