POLICE officers allegedly killed a man who shot at them when they were going to bring in him for questioning over an armed robbery incident in East Sepik.
Provincial police commander Superintendent Robert Gesa they were tipped off that the man, an officer in the police auxiliary unit, had been involved in the K13,000 robbery at the Air Niugini office at Boram airport on Thursday. Three other suspects were earlier injured during an exchange of fire with police.
Gesa said at around 8.30am on Thursday, four armed men held up a security officer and the airline ticketing officer and took a bag containing K13,000 collected from passengers as excess baggage fees.
They fled in a boat towards Kairuru Island. Police followed them in another boat.
Three were shot and are being treated at the Wewak General Hospital in Boram under police custody. Gesa said they were then tipped off that the auxiliary police officer was also involved in the robbery. “So on Friday, officers went to his house at Meni. When he was asked to come out of the house, he fired at the officers. Police gunned him down.”
