A MURDER suspect who had been on the run from police for 12 years has been arrested in Manus.
Manus police commander Chief Inspector David Yapu said the suspect, Karua Pomeri, 35, from Ndranou village in the Bupi Chupen-Lelemadih local level government, was arrested and charged with the murder of Peter Tawe on Dec 18, 2006.
The prime suspect, Benny Warangu, from Western, was charged in 2016 and is serving a prison term of 16 years with hard labour at Ningerum jail in Western.
Yapu said the arrest of Pomeri eventuated when new evidence surfaced that he was allegedly also involved in the killing of Tawe at the Ndranou ward.
The suspect was also charged with break and enter and stealing at a trade store belonging to Jacob Nanget at Ndranou last month.
Yapu commended community leaders from Ndranou ward for assisting police and conducted a citizen’s arrest of the suspect and handed him over to police.
“This is a classic example displayed by community leaders from Ndranou and the law allows for a citizen arrest by leaders in the community,” he said.
