A MAN suspected of killing a policeman, Jebedee Dadada, and three other detainees escaped from the Popondetta police cell on Monday by using a hacksaw to cut an iron bar on the cell window.
Provincial police commander Victor Isouve said the escape occurred between 11.30pm and midnight during a  downpour.
Isouve, who was frustrated about the escape, said he did not know how the hacksaw had been smuggled in.
“I will have to find out from my police station commander how they had access to the tool,” he said.
Dadada, who has escaped from custody three times previously, had been on the run since 2008 after allegedly killing detective Snr Const Boigo Duna.
He was captured by police on Dec 24 on Sorovi Road with 50 rounds of live ammunition and two pop-guns.
Isouve said during the escape there were 44 detainees in the cell but they did not join the four men who broke out.
He said the escape was well-timed and executed as it happened when most of the officers in the province were retiring to their homes for rest after two weeks of hectic Christmas and New Year operations.
Isouve said he would get a full briefing from the station commander before deciding on what action to take next.
