SIX men have been charged with arson for allegedly burning a container of election ballot boxes in Banz, Jiwaka, two months ago.
Police operations chief Simon Kauba said on Monday the men were picked up in different parts of Jiwaka by police.
He said the suspects were being detained at the Banz police station cells while waiting for their respective court appearances.
Kauba named the suspects as James Bombie, 35, from Tombel, Jiwaka; Oho Du Mong, 36, from Tombel, Jiwaka; John Mangi, 55, from Kupa, Minj, Martin Tongam, 40, from Tombel, Jiwaka; and Joseph Kanke Tolai, 32, from Kaunigl, Minj.
“They are all charged with arson,” Kauba said.
“We are also looking at the possibility of laying other charges on them.”
“Investigations are continuing and others implicated will be rounded up and arrested,” he said.
The container that the ballot boxes were in was stored on the premises of a second hand clothing shop in Banz. Its locks were cut open and the ballot boxes set on fire.
