TWO men were arrested and charged on Tuesday following an attempt to burn a container full of ballot boxes in the Tari-Pori district, Hela.

Police alleged the suspects took four litres of petrol into the Tari police station and tried to set the container fully loaded with ballot boxes on fire.

Provincial police commander Supt Jimmy Onopia said their plan failed when police guarding the container apprehended them.

“This is totally insane and unconstitutional,” he said.

“Why would people do such thing to destroy something which all people from the province were keeping their eye on?

“This election is for the people in the community and a minority group will never destroy the ballot boxes and I have increased the police duties at night.”

Onopia said police had increased security at the counting venues.
