RELATIVES of a suspect are demanding a K30,000 compensation from the police for injuring him when arresting him in Bougainville, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Francis Tokura says.
“The suspect was injured when resisting arrest in Arawa last week,” Tokura said.
“He was among a group of men drinking homebrew when police arrested him.”
DCP Tokura, who is also the Bougainville commander, said police on patrol came across some men drinking homebrew and they urged them to stop and return home. “However, the suspect approached them in an aggressive manner and policemen had to use force to subdue him, causing injuries to his face,” he said.
“He was charged with resisting police and drinking homebrew alcohol in a public place.
“He is now remanded in custody at the Arawa Police Station.
“His relatives approached the police and demanded compensation.
“The relatives were advised that it was the work of the police and that they were not supposed to demand compensations.”
