Suspension of Hela’s top cop extended

THE suspension of Hela police commander Teddy Agwi has been extended in order for the investigation process to be completed properly, a senior police officer says.
Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police for Highlands Western End, John Kale, said the 21-day suspension of Agwi had elapsed over the weekend but there was a need to extend it.
“The internal investigation process did not progress as we expected so there is a delay to his reinstatement after the 21 days of suspension,” he said.
Kale said he had appointed Snr Insp Robin Bore as care-taker commander for Hela.
“PPC Agwi is not removed from his position as the PPC for Hela as the substantive matter is still pending in court,” he said.
Kale said he had made a decision to suspend Agwi based on an incident that happened last month in Tari where two police personnel were shot by local tribesmen.
He said Agwi’s suspension was over poor command and control.
“I have appointed Snr Insp Bore as the caretaker PPC and not as Acting PPC because of the ongoing court case by PPC Agwi,” he said.
He said people in Hela needed to understand that neither he nor the provincial administrator could remove Agwi.
The power to do so rests on the courts.
