THE success of the 2013 FINA Swimming Official School in Oceania in Port Moresby is timely as it enables PNG Swimming Inc to establish a team of officials for the 2015 Pacific Games.

PNG Swimming patron Bart Philemon said the school at the Gateway Hotel from April 6-16 attracted 36 participants made up of past swimmers, school teachers, coaches, parents and interested people.

The participants now can conduct a competition under FINA rules

“The future progress of the sport of swimming in Papua New Guinea depends on individual commitments from people like you,” he said.

“You play a very important role without which swimming cannot progress.

“Our country is a land of a thousand tribes, speaking in over 800 distinct different languages, which makes us the most diversified country in the world.

“I truly believe that sports can greatly be a unifying force in uniting our country into one people, one country and one nation.

“Swimming is part and parcel of the process.

“PNGSI needs to provide our technical officials with the latest and best information available.

“The school was very efficiently organised by the host PNGSI.”

At the end of the school, diplomas of participation and a FINA pin were handed out to participants,” Søren Korbo, FINA TSC honorary secretary, said.
