THE Gazebo Club Inc – the oldest social facility in the mining township of Tabubil, Western – has opened a new K1.2 million wing.
Established in the 1980s, it is one of only three non-profit social clubs in Tabubil. The other two are the hash and golf clubs.
The new wing is paid for by the savings of members totalling K950,000.
Ok Tedi Mining Ltd (OTML) assisted with K200,000 while the remaining K50,000 was given by the MRSM Group of Companies – Tabubil Engineering, Mineral Resources Star Mountains and Fubilan Catering Services.
OTML acting managing director and chief executive officer Brett Young said the new wing was a reflection of the sacrifice and commitment made by its members.
“This is a magnificent facility and you cannot underestimate the importance of such a facility.
“K950,000 raised by yourselves shows your great commitment,” he said.
The new wing is named after long-serving club president Mathew Awari who is also the manager Infrastructure Support at the mine.
Awari described the new wing as the club’s most significant change by far.
It should sufficiently accommodate the increasing membership and provide additional facilities for members and their families to enjoy.
There are plans to improve the kitchen and have a children’s playground.
“Thank you for your efforts, sacrifice and your dedication throughout the years.
“And I hope that you will enjoy and benefit from your hard work and contributions towards the new wing and facilities at Gazebo,” Awari said.
Awari revealed that the new building would be a landmark in Tabubil and the Star Mountains even after Ok Tedi closes.
