TABLE tennis started last Friday before the opening ceremony of the Pacific Games with the team events for both males and females which ended on Monday with the medal ceremony, competition manager Karai Taukarai says.

“As always in the Pacific Games, we have Tahiti and New Caledonia pretty much dominating this game with the gold medal going to Tahiti.

“New Caledonia got the silver and Vanuatu won bronze.

“Table tennis has been really great, all athletes are happy with what they are seeing and getting.

“The spectators are coming out in good numbers, now that many know where the game is held or have established where we are playing.

“Team PNG is doing well. Experience-wise our boys and girls are getting the hang of it.

“Some of the players are first time players against experienced players but we’ll see how things are going.”

He explained that table tennis started in the country a while back but was revived only 2006 after a dormancy of quite a few years.

Yesterday saw the group singles for both males and females with the top two within each of the group progressing to the knock out stages.
