Tai family business supports hospital

LYN Tai is putting to good use her business acumen and the valuable training she received in Australia to operate a guest house in Chimbu.
She and husband Robert run the Katerossel Transit Guest House near the Sir Joseph Nombri Kundiawa General Hospital.
She graduated in 2018 from the Australian Skills Development Institute majoring in business management.
She was awarded a scholarship by the Australian Government to study at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Brisbane.

She is now using the skills and knowledge she acquired to operate the family business.
“I thank the Australian Government for awarding the short-term courses that enabled me to graduate with a Certificate in Small Medium Enterprise Entrepreneurship which is greatly helping our family business.”
She described the training she went through with other Papua New Guineans as intensive and comprehensive.
Lyn is from Mogl-Kakai village in the Yongomugl Local Level Government.
She went through the primary school grades at at Mogl Primary, before attending the Lutheran Day High School from 2002 to 2005.
She then enrolled at the Matriculation School at the University Centre for Grades 11 and 12.
She and Robert have five children: Herman, Katerossel, Justin, Bangi and Ismael.
They began their small enterprise projects with a chicken farm, a piggery, trade store and now a guest house.
The guest house provides accommodation for people from around the country visiting relatives at the Kundiawa Hospital which is nearby.
“We decided to build the guest house for visitors to the hospital.”
The rooms upstairs are occupied by doctors on short-term assignments to the hospital.
Robert who had previously worked at the Mt Wilhelm Hotel is using his experience as a handyman, bartender, security guard and bouncer in the family business.
They do not have to employ a carpenter, plumber, painter or tradesmen because he can do all.
“I am self-trained in all these trades.”
