Take advantage of situation

Letters

EVERY coin has two sides. The Covid-19 virus epidemic has certainly made Port Moresby a lot cleaner and safer.
The Government is urged to take advantage of this positive change.
The Government needs to make the betel nut ban a law which must be policed effectively.
Most of the rubbish in Port Moresby is created by betel nut sellers and consumers alike.
A visit to the Waigani market area directly opposite the Morata bus stop will demonstrate the dramatic improvement in both hygiene and safety.
The betel nut markets are hot spots where litter and rascals thrive.
Do away with the betel nut market and all the ills associated with it will be gone too.
PNG is richly blessed with resources other than betel nut.
People will be forced to turn to the cultivation of other farm produces in order to subsist.
We should not argue that betel nut is the only source of revenue and livelihood.
Secondly, the Government should enforce the Vagrancy Act.
Forget the politicians who will be emotional about this Act.
The positives of the Vagrancy Act outweigh the argument for “rights”. Think of the fact that the lack of enforcing the Vagrancy Act deprives people of their rights to a safer and more hygienic lives.
We have to go for what is of greater good for our country.
Freedom of movement and other human rights issues arising from the Vagrancy Act pale in comparisons to people dying for reasons associated with betel nut.
Think of the recent death of a father in Kaugere over the 20 toea betel nut issue.
Would it have happened if betel nut ban had been policed effectively?
Would it have happened if the Vagrancy Act had been enforced?
I urge the Government to take advantage of this virus epidemic and bring long overdue laws into effective policing.
Make the betel nut ban and Vagrancy Act a legacy of the coronavirus epidemic.

Concerned,
Morata II
