SPORTS Minister Justin Tkatchenko has urged the sporting public to get involved in nominating candidates for the 22nd SP Sports Awards.
Tkatchenko said this during the official launch of sports annual gala event at the Brew Kettle, SP Brewery headquarters yesterday.
“The SP Sports Awards has set a great legacy in recognising sporting achievements and SP Brewery must be commended for its commitment over two decades,” Tkatchenko said.
Tkatchenko said that Papua New Guinea was on the threshold of two huge sporting events in the PNG Games in Lae in November this year and the Pacific Games next year.
“This is just the kind of reward or bonus an athlete or administrator will thrive on to shine in these two major events,” Tkatchenko said.
In past years the awards, particularly the title of the sportsman and woman of the year has been dominated by the country’s elite athletes in Toea Wisil, Dika Toua and Ryan Pini.
“I urge the public to take the time to look at the categories and if they know someone who should be recognised then give it a go and nominate that person, team or administration to have a chance at being a finalist.”
South Pacific Brewery general manager Stan Joyce highlighted that their continued involvement relies on their partnership and role with the media.
He announced the allocation of K43,000 to the various prize-winners in each category.
“This is part of our social obligation and re-investing in the community,” Joyce added.
He also named support sponsors Air Niugini, City Pharmacy Group of Companies, Crowne Plaza, EMTV, FM 100 and Theodist that have contributed towards a memorable occasion, and called for their continued engagement.
Joyce also announced the appointment of prominent lawyer and former national basketball representative, coach and administrator Moses Koiri as the new chairman of the SP Sports Awards selection committee.
Koiri replaces Emily Taule, who held the position for the past eight years.
Nomination forms can be collected at the PNG Olympic Committee office at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby or call the following numbers  323 0114/323 0108/71001063.
Nominations close on March 31.
