Take back Woodlark Island

Letters

LET me condemn the behaviour of individuals associated with the so-called investor using the name of Murua LLG president to promote the interest of Carter Holdings.
The recent media developments with the focus on Woodlark island is an initiative by the member for Samarai–Murua after learning of the three portions of land (60,000ha) was awarded by the court to Carter Holdings ( formerly Vitroplant) when there was a declaration made in 2016 to return the land to the natives of the island.
The member is exercising his right as the duly elected representative to seek ways to return what rightfully belong to the 10,000 people of Murua LLG.
The people of Woodlark Island are not against development, in fact any form of investment is welcomed at this stage but so long as it is consistent with the laws of PNG and the people receive maximum benefit out of any development.
Now, all of these won’t take effect without the people been empowered, one of which is through land ownership as in the case of Woodlark Island.
Even if these resources are not harvested in our time, it will always be there for future generations, what is at stake is the legal right to own the land.
We join our member and every other right thinking citizen in the campaign to take back Woodlark Island – the land of our ancestors, for present and future generations.

Kali babaw yakids,
Dagu Peter
